Your pool filter is what recirculates water to keep little particles of debris out and your pool water clear. It’s essential to keep it clean and maintained, which is a service that HQ Pools offers to all of our customers!
If you feel like putting the work in yourself, here’s just a few things you should know about your pool filter.
How long your pool filter lasts depends entirely on what type of filter it is, along with how much dirt it has to contend with.
If you keep your pool maintained, you should expect the following useful life out of each type of filter:
Filter Cartridge: 2000 working hours, or 2-4 years
Sand Filter: 3-7 years
Glass Filter: 7-15 years
Your pool filters might decrease in quality, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time to replace them. They could just need a good cleaning.
If you’re using a cartridge filter, all you need to do is remove it and rinse it thoroughly with a stiff brush and hose. It only takes a few minutes, and you should be cleaning it once a week for optimal performance.
For glass or sand-based filter systems, all you need to do to clean it is backwash it. Almost all filter systems come with a backwash option, which should be used whenever you notice the psi is raised by more than 8-10 above its normal level.
Look for a few different signs of an underperforming filter that needs replacement:
Rapid Underperformance: If you regularly clean your filter and it is still frequently clogging or not clearing your pool of debris effectively, it may need to be replaced.
Use-By-Date: If you have a cartridge filter, many of them come with a use-by date. If it’s still effective, you can keep using it, but if it is no longer working as it should and it’s past its date, it’s time to replace it.
Damaged Filter: Tearing can happen with the overuse of cartridge filters. If you notice tears in it, replace it immediately.
