SALTWATER POOLS
You might think that saltwater pools are similar to seawater and simulate the ocean but that’s far from accurate. They actually still contain chlorine! Saltwater pools use systems that create a process of electrolysis which produces just enough chlorine to disinfect the pool.
PROS
Saltwater pools use natural chlorine which means fewer chemicals are required to keep the pool sanitary. In turn, the less harsh chlorine won’t fade swimwear and other pool gear. For people with sensitive eyes or skin, saltwater can be a gentler alternative.
CONS
Saltwater pools are more expensive than traditional chlorinated ones and can be more complex when needing repairs. The initial investment for a saltwater pool is more expensive since you will need saltwater-specific lights, liners, masonry, etc.
CHLORINE POOLS
Traditional chlorine pools are the popular option since they are less expensive to install and maintain. The chlorine is added to the pool in order to disinfect the water rather than being produced by a salt chlorinator.
PROS
Chlorine pools require a smaller initial investment and use less electricity making them more affordable. Repairs are simpler and do not require a salt-specific technician. Overall, chlorine pools are more approachable for the average pool owner.
CONS
The biggest issue most people have with chlorine pools is the harsh effects they can have on the skin, hair, and eyes. Chlorine pools also require more maintenance to keep the water sanitary. The chemicals need to be balanced properly and maintained.
